Mike Brown out, Mike D’Dantoni in? Well, that appears to be the case for the Lakers as former head coach Phil Jackson overplayed his hand. There’s no doubt he was the front-runner for the gig. Following the Mike Brown firing, Jackson canceled a speaking engagement, fueling speculation the Lakers had talked to him.
But according to the LA Times, he simply asked for too much, including part ownership of the team. The Lakers switched gears and hired NBA retread Mike D’Antoni to a three-year deal for $12 million.
We signed Mike D’Antoni to a multi-year deal,” Lakers spokesman John Black said, mentioning the team’s owner and top two executives. “Dr. [Jerry] Buss, Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak were unanimous that Mike D’Antoni was the best coach for the team at this time.”
Best coach at this time? Uh, how about best coach at this time that’s not a diva.
